It’s National Donut Day!
There seems to be a National Day for everything. Every kind of food you could imagine, every type of clothing, every kind of activity seems to have its own National Day that is registered through the National Day Calendar. Today is National Donut Day. According to National Today, 91% of Americans either love or like donuts. Only 1% of Americans that were surveyed said they hate donuts. The most popular flavors according to those that took part in the poll were glazed and Boston cream. My favorite is apple spice, it's apple and cinnamon together, almost like an apple pie in a donut. There aren't many donuts that I don't like. Some of my other favorites are blueberry glazed and Boston cream. With today being national donut day some of my co-workers brought in donuts from a variety of places.
National Donut Day is celebrated on the first Friday of June every year. According to National Day Calendar, it is to honor the Salvation Army women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. The women would make the donuts in oil in the soldiers' helmets. The Salvation Army of Chicago started National Donut Day in 1938 as a way to raise funds to help those struggling with the great depression.
Today you can get a free donut at Dunkin Donuts when you buy a drink. Wal-mart is also giving away free glazed donuts all day. According to USA Today, Wal-mart is planning on giving away more than 1.2 million donuts nationwide.
So even if you're on a diet, I think you should enjoy a donut today, because it's National Donut Day and it only comes once a year. I also noticed on the National Day Calendar website today is Leave The Office Early Day (maybe to go get free donuts?) and National Heimlich Maneuver Day. Maybe that's because a lot of people choke on free donuts today?
