Investigation Continues into Fatal Blast at Broome Speedway

Federal investigators have been looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a man who was working at a Speedway convenience store near Binghamton.

57-year-old Arthur Hines of Syracuse was killed in the September 20 incident at the business on Old Front Street in the town of Dickinson.

Hines was working for Environmental Products and Services of Vermont on a tank-cleaning project. An explosion and fire occurred while Hines was inside a fuel tank.

A U.S. Department of Labor spokesman Friday said the investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is still open.

The agency has up to six months to complete an inspection following a workplace incident.

New York State Police conducted an initial investigation in the aftermath of the worker's death. A spokeswoman said the agency's review of the incident is closed.

Construction work is continuing outside the Speedway store as part of a renovation project at the site. An employee said gasoline sales at the location could resume in six weeks.

Company representatives for Speedway and Environmental Products and Services of Vermont did not respond to requests for comment on Friday.
