We throw out tons of food each year in America and I just found out that most of what we toss is still good although you wouldn't know it by the package date.

Here are some examples:

1. Store bought (not farm bought) eggs are good for 45 days past their use by date!

2. According to the Institute of Culinary Education, uncooked pasta is edible eternally. it may lose flavor along the way or get bugs in it but otherwise, eat away!

3. Unopened canned tuna? How about 3 to 5 years. As long as it was stored in a cool, dry location and not dented.

4. Unopened canned or jarred gravy is good for 2 to 5 years! Nice!

5. Apple pie. You can keep a baked pie on the counter for 2 days before pitching it. It lasts one day longer in the refrigerator but if you freeze it you can enjoy it for another 3 to 4 months!

I love the website Still Tasty! Check them out for everything food/date related.
