Broome County officials say a fifth person has died of causes linked to COVID-19.

The latest death was announced Sunday afternoon. According to County Executive Jason Garnar, a man in his 80s died at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton.

Information released by the county indicates 69 positive coronvirus test results have been received. 129 people were reported to be in mandatory quarantine and 11 were in precautionary quarantine.

Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday morning announced that 4,159 people had died due to COVID-19. That figure included 594 deaths over the past 24 hours.

Based on the latest numbers, Cuomo said "we could be very near the apex." He noted 630 people died in New York due to coronavirus the previous day. He acknowledged it's too early to know whether the number of daily deaths in the state has reached a high point.

Health officials continue to advise people to stay home unless absolutely necessary.
