This was not a good weekend for quarterbacks in the National Football League.  Injuries and illness have swept over the NFL like a plague.  Word came out early in the week that second-year New York Jets' quarterback Sam Darnold was diagnosed as suffering from mononucleosis and was sidelined indefinitely.  That left backup quarterback Trevor Siemian as the starter.  That lasted less than two quarters as he went down after a hit by Cleveland's Myles Garrett. He left the game and it was revealed today (Tuesday) that he needs season-ending surgery on his left ankle.

In Pittsburgh Ben Roethlsberger left the game against the Seattle Seahawks with an arm injury in the first half.  It was determined he needs season-ending surgery on his throwing arm.  Roethlisberger has been the heart of the Pittsburgh offense for years.  Now, over the past two seasons Pittsburgh has lost Roethlisberger along with Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell, two of the most explosive offensive players in the NFL.

Drew Brees is believed to have injured a ligament on his throwing thumb after he hit his hand on Aaron Donald on a pass rush early in the Saints loss to the Rams. Brees is scheduled to have surgery on Wednesday and is expected to be out at least six weeks.

To top off the turbulent week for quarterbacks the New York Giants announced  that veteran Eli Manning was being replaced as the team's starting quarterback by rookie Daniel Jones.  Manning has been the Giants starting quarterback for over 15 seasons.  With the team struggling the coaches and management feel it's time to make a change.

It is difficult to remember an NFL weekend with the amount of impactful changes involving signal callers or any other position.  The season of change is here in the National Football League.
