Police were searching for four suspects after a late-afternoon "shootout" in a residential neighborhood on Binghamton's West Side.

Gunfire erupted in the area of 121 Murray Street around 2:50 p.m. Monday. Juanita Crabb lived in that house when she was Binghamton mayor from 1982 to 1993.

Police chief Joseph Zikuski told WNBF News at the scene that "apparently there was some type of shootout" in which over a dozen shots were fired.

Zikuski said four black males were seen running from the area toward North Street. He provided no age or clothing description for the suspects.

The police chief said "a couple of vehicles" and "a few houses" were struck by gunfire but there was no immediate indication that anyone was wounded.

Zikuski said there was no known connection between the shooting and any other incident.

Several Binghamton University students were inside a Murray Street apartment house when the shooting happened.

They reported hearing several gunshots. They expressed shock when they noticed one of the bullets went through a front window.

Two cars parked on the east side of Murray Street were struck by gunfire.

The street between Main and North streets was shut down for hours while investigators collected shell casings and other evidence.
