A man is dead after he reportedly was shot by state police who had been negotiating with him for hours in Delaware County.

Authorities say troopers encountered the armed man at a residence on Route 8 in the town of Deposit around 2 p.m. Wednesday.

According to a New York State Police news release, the man was believed to be suicidal. He fired a weapon at troopers, who returned fire, striking the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The exchange of gunfire is said to have happened shortly before 8 p.m. Police have not released the man's name.

A section of Route 8 was closed between China Road and Michigan Hollow Road for several hours.
