Delaware Sheriff Warns of On-Line COVID Work Scams

While a lot of people are finding they have to look for work or work from home in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Delaware County Sheriff’s officials say scammers are taking advantage.

Fraud cases involving job application websites, work at home ads, charitable organizations and even dating services have surfaced.  

Sheriff Craig DuMond says the scammer gains the victim’s trust through emails then convinces them to accept a check or other form of “payment” like electronic fund transfers which the victim is told to put in their bank account and withdraw the funds to send back to the new “friend/associate”, leaving the victim with a drained bank account.

Sheriff Dumond says the vast majority of scams prey on emotions of the victim.  Residents should always verify the legitimacy of businesses or causes before offering any financial commitment.
