Authorities say a car was driving east on The Southern Tier Expressway shortly after 6:30 p.m. when it hit a deer at around 2.5 miles east of Exit 61 between Waverly and Nichols.

The car began to slow down when a tractor trailer, also traveling eastbound, slammed into the back of the passenger vehicle.

The occupants of the car were taken to Robert Packer Hospital is Sayre with one of those people dying as a result of the collision.

The names of those in the two vehicles have not been released.

Sheriff's officials say their investigation is continuing and anyone with information or who may have seen the crash is asked to call the Tioga County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division at (607) 687-1010.

The crash closed both eastbound lanes of I86/State Route 17 for several hours Sunday night but authorities continued their investigation at the scene for much of the following day.
