A vehicle collision near the scene of a serious crash in March involving a DOT employee resulted in the closure of part of Route 17 in Nichols.

Authorities say the Southern Tier Expressway was shut down to westbound traffic after a crash that happened in a work zone late Monday morning.

According to New York State Police, the incident near Exit 63 was reported at 10:43 a.m.

A sport utility vehicle had stopped to avoid a construction barrel that had tipped over. A Department of Transportation worker was retrieving the barrel when a pickup truck rear-ended the SUV. The truck was pulling a camper.

No injuries were reported in the crash. The highway was closed until 1 p.m.

Monday's collision happened in the same construction area where 45-year-old Dennis "Matt" Howe was injured when a tractor-trailer struck a DOT truck in March.

Howe died several days after the crash.
