July 29th, 1970, The Doors were on top of the world.

It was on that date when Light My Fire became their first number one song on the U.S. singles chart. This particular version was the Top 40 friendly single, meaning, it was a much shorter version of the album cut. In the Classic Rock world today, that would be considered a travesty to air on the radio.

The Brits were not so kind to the song, topping out at number 49 on the U.K. singles charts. Maybe The Doors were a bit too hip for the folks across the pond. Light My Fire was recorded in 1966 and released in May of 1967. The Doors performed this song on the Ed Sullivan Show, and were asked to change the line "Girl, we couldn't get much higher" with "Girl, we couldn't get much better", but you know Jim Morrison would have no part of that even thought he agreed to do so.

A bit of trivia - Do you remember who covered this song with some success? It was Jose Feliciano in 1968 reaching the lower end of the U.S. Top 40 singles chart.

For this week's Classic Rock Pick, here's The Doors performing Light My Fire on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1967.
