New York Governor Andrew Cuomo February 11 announced $3.4 million dollars in grants for 111 projects across the state designed to prevent hunger and reduce the disposal of food waste through donation and recycling.

The initiative is a partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Feeding New York Food Bank Network.

The Cortland Food Project Rescue and Waste Prevention will use the funds to develop the City’s first local food rescue system to seek out past-prime produce for use in soup kitchens, food pantries and the planned commercial community kitchen and entrepreneurship program.

Tompkins County is being awarded $70,426 to address wasted food at targeted apartment complexes and multi-family units through the education of tenants and property managers.  The program would also focus on smart shopping and storage, food preparation, a cooler location for sharing excess edible food and leftover donations to Friendship Donations Network.
