The Tioga County Anti-Hunger Task Force is launching Child Hunger Awareness Week starting June 6 to raise awareness of childhood food insecurity in the County.

Speaking on the June 4 edition of the weekly local public affairs program, Southern Tier Close Up, Tioga Opportunities Director of Community Services, Andrew Hafer discusses how the task force formed and the work being done to address hunger challenges in Tioga.

Hafer says the events marking the week begin with a news conference at the Tioga Opportunities offices at 9 Sheldon Guile Blvd., Owego and continue with the showing of the film, A Place at the Table" on Thursday, June 9 at the Owego Kitchen.

Hafer says 20.6% of children in Tioga County are considered food insecure and 12.6% are living below the poverty level.  He adds, while there are programs and pantries available to help, many families don't know about them or have transportation challenges in getting to them
