Broome Officials React to Johnson & Johnson Opioid Settlement
Broome County Executive Jason Garnar is among local elected officials praising the settlement announced by state Attorney General Letitia James with Johnson and Johnson for its role in the Opioid Crisis.
The company agreed to pay up to $238-million to New York State in the largest monetary settlement ever secured by James’ office.
The Attorney General has been gathering reaction from officials around the state on the heels of the weekend announcement.
In a news release provided by James’ office, Garnar called the settlement “a huge win for the people of Broome County” and says the county will be able to make more investments in drug intervention, treatment and prevention programs.

Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, also a Democrat, is quoted in the news release as saying its important that payments go directly to prevention, early intervention and treatment.
Johnson and Johnson is downplaying the A.G.’s announcement, saying the deal does not indicate any wrong-doing and the ban on manufacturing and selling the opioids applies to drugs that already are no longer marketed in the United States.
