Halloween is almost here! We've only been bombarded with that fact since last July...or was it earlier?

Anyway, the kiddies are getting geared up for all that candy. I know I was as Halloween got closer. Nothing stopped us from our rounds through the neighborhood. Not cold temperatures, rain, and even snow. Yes, snow. I remember one year, there was an accumulation of snow on Halloween, but that didn't stop our quest to get that candy.

Times change, and over the years, I've noticed that not many trick-or-treaters go from house to house in my neighborhood anymore, and for those who do, the visit is usually in daylight, And that makes total sense as far as safety is concerned.

But also, a factor, that started to gain traction in the mid-1990s according to NPR, events called Trunk or Treat were becoming a popular, safer way for kids to get that delicious candy.

Truck or Treat events are held throughout many communities in the U.S., including our area as well. One such event will be held this Sunday (October 20th) presented by the Broome County Department of Parks, Recreation and Youth Services.

The 6th Annual Trunk or Treat event will be held at Otsiningo Park in Binghamton from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the west parking lot. The Broome County Parks staff and Broome Security will direct traffic through the park to the designated area.

This event is a family-friendly event and is free to the community. Local businesses, organizations, agencies, and non-profits will have their trunks decorated, and filled with candy and treats.

Broome County Department of Parks, Recreation and Youth Services. encourage local businesses, organizations, non-profits, and clubs to participate if they wish. To register and learn about the event rules, visit the Go Broome County website's trunk or treat page, or call (607) 778-2193.
