Binghamton Mayor Appoints New Assistant Police Chief

The Binghamton police department is about to get a new assistant chief.

Detective Captain John Ryan has been appointed to an assistant chief post by Mayor Richard David.

Ryan will join William Yeager in the role of assistant chief. He succeeds David Eggleston, who is retiring. The department is overseen by Joseph Zikuski, who has been city police chief since July 2008.

The mayor disclosed the promotion Tuesday on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program. He said it was a "tough decision" in choosing from among the three eligible candidates.

Two other captains, John Chapman and Larry Hendrickson, were considered for the assistant chief post.

The 44-year-old Ryan is a native of Binghamton's South Side. He started his law enforcement career with the Broome County security division in 1994. He later worked as a corrections officer for the Broome County Sheriff's Office. He then was as an officer with the Vestal Police Department for a few years before joining the Binghamton Police Department in 2000.

Eggleston, who is retiring this month, joined the Binghamton police in 1983.
