Binghamton Man Charged with Robbing West Side Bank

A suspect in the robbery of a bank on Binghamton's West Side was in custody just over five minutes after the heist occurred.

Authorities say a man entered the Peoples Security Bank & Trust office at 273 Main Street shortly before 9:30 a.m. Friday when an employee went outside to pick up some mail. The bank was closed to the public but the suspect entered through an unlocked door.

A worker gave the man some cash after he demanded money. No weapon was displayed.

A bank employee recognized the robber and police found him a few blocks away at his residence on Hazel Street in the First Ward.

Police say 28-year-old Joshua Covey has been charged with third-degree robbery.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for Covey's home and found the money believed to have been taken in the incident.

An Endicott police canine unit assisted city police in the robbery investigation.
