Police have apprehended a suspect in connection with an attempt to rob a bank on Binghamton's West Side.

Authorities say 61-year-old Philip Stein of Conklin Avenue, Binghamton, has been charged with third-degree attempted robbery.

Stein is believed to be the man who handed a note demanding cash to a teller at Citizens Bank at 247 Main Street around 10:25 a.m. Thursday.

Investigators say no weapon was displayed, although the note threatened the use of a gun.

The man left the bank before getting any cash. He was last seen on foot, heading east on Main Street.

Police officers spotted Stein near Glenwood Avenue in the area of Foundry Plaza shortly after the attempted robbery.

In addition to the attempted robbery count, Stein was arrested for a parole violation.

Detectives say the incident was not related to the February 23 robbery of the same bank or the January 10 robbery of an M&T Bank office on Robinson Street. No arrests have been made in those heists.
