Binghamton Man Accused of Stabbing Neighbor in Head and Neck

A suspect has been arrested after a Binghamton man was stabbed during a dispute in front of his home.

Authorities said 38-year-old Joseph Irons was being held at Broome County Jail after being charged with first-degree assault.

According to city police, the stabbing occurred in the area of 22 Lydia Street around 2:45 p.m. Thursday.

The injured man told officers he had been stabbed by a neighbor who lives at 26 Lydia Street.

Investigators said officers encountered the suspect at his residence. According to a news release, he was on a second-floor porch and refused to surrender.

After about two hours, Irons surrendered to police without incident.

Detectives said Irons was found to possess three long guns at the home. They were given to police, who said an "extreme risk protection order" will be requested because of the firearms that were discovered.

The man who was stabbed was said to be in his early 50s. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries. His name and condition were not released.

Ashley Irons, the suspect's wife, said police executed a search warrant at the residence Friday. She said "they took three guns" but they all were legally possessed.

Irons said the man who was stabbed had threatened to kill her and her husband. She said her husband responded by saying they should discuss the matter "man to man."

Irons said the other man pushed her husband to the ground and her husband pulled out a four-inch long homemade knife.
