Binghamton Hydrant Replacement Closes Street

A block of a busy downtown Binghamton street was closed to traffic as crews continued work on replacing a fire hydrant that was hit by a vehicle.

Workers who started digging a deep hole next to the State Street parking ramp on Friday said they were installing a new hydrant. They said they didn't know when the hydrant that had been near the garage entrance was struck.

The crew using heavy equipment from Albert Torto Construction Corporation was back on the job Monday morning. They were digging a trench across the northbound lanes of State Street. The street was closed to through traffic, although access was maintained to the parking garage.

By late Monday afternoon, the workers were gone but equipment remained at the site and steel plates were positioned across the excavation zone.

It could not be determined who will be paying for the hydrant replacement project.
