Binghamton Health Center Official “Wasted $121,000 in Taxpayer Funds”

A Binghamton man has been accused of squandering $121,000 in money belonging to state taxpayers by paying for material never used on a project in the city.

57-year-old Jeffrey Flansburg is said to have used a state credit card to purchase items from a Florida company at "exorbitantly inflated prices." The material was supposed to be utilized for a duct-cleaning job at the Office of Mental Health's Greater Binghamton Health Center on Robinson Street.

According to New York State Inspector General Letizia Tagliafierro, Flansburg disregarded procurement rules when he bought the material. He also allegedly took action to conceal the inappropriate purchases.

Flansburg has been the plant superintendent at the mental health facility on Binghamton's East Side. He is on administrative leave.

It's unclear what, if any, punishment Flansburg faces for allegedly wasting taxpayer funds.

Flansburg could not be reached for comment on the assertions made by the state inspector general.
