A 16-year-old Binghamton High School student has died after she was struck by an out-of-control vehicle on the city's West Side.

A statement released by the Binghamton City School District confirmed the death of Harper Stantz. She died at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

Stantz and 19-year-old Britney Laserinko were hit by a Jeep Wrangler as they walked home after playing tennis at Recreation Park Monday afternoon.

According to the school district statement, Laserinko "remains under medical observation at a Syracuse hospital." She has "undergone significant surgery" and was reported in stable condition.

The statement said Harper Stantz "brightened the lives of all who knew her."

Binghamton police Detective Captain John Ryan Wednesday afternoon said the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrians, 33-year-old Kevin Wilcox of Harpursville, remains in Broome County Jail.

Wilcox has been charged with vehicular assault and driving while ability impaired by drugs.
