Binghamton University students may soon be living in a converted funeral home on the city's West Side.

The planning commission has approved the project at the former McDevitt & McManus Funeral Home at 88 Front Street.

Broome County property records indicate the site was acquired for nearly $450,000 last September.

Developers Josh Bishop and Liam Burns plan to convert the vacant funeral home building into five residential units with a total of 30 bedrooms. Some parking for the project would be available in a small Front Street lot located east of Binghamton High School.

Bishop said work on the design plans for the project is being finalized. Construction at the site is expected to start this spring.

Bishop said the goal is to have the remodeled building ready for occupancy in the fall.
