Fire caused extensive damage to a Binghamton store filled with craft beers and minor damage to a neighboring wine and liquor business.

The blaze at the West Side Beer Depot at 334 Main Street on the city's West Side was discovered by someone who was passing by the business.

Fire marshal Alan Gardiner said the fire was reported at 1:42 a.m. Two residents who lived in apartments above the businesses were not injured.

Gardiner said most of the damage was confined to the Beer Depot store, although the neighboring Lane's Wines and Spirits store sustained some damage.

Binghamton police and fire investigators were at the scene trying to determine what caused the blaze.

Employees of the two stores told a reporter at the scene that "everything was fine" when the businesses closed at 9 p.m. Sunday. They said they left the stores about 30 minutes later.

A sprinkler system in the Beer Depot helped to contain the blaze.

An employee expected the Lane's and Spirits store to reopen soon but the Beer Depot's reopening will be delayed because of the extensive damage sustained by that business.
