On September 19, 2025, the New York State Police announced the Autism Awareness Visor Card Program. The program assists members of law enforcement and individuals with autism during public interactions.

According to the announcement from the New York State Police, approximately one in every forty-five adults in the United States has autism.  Diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder over the past few decades have become more prevalent.

Symptoms may include challenges with communication and social interaction, such as difficulty engaging in conversation or maintaining eye contact, repetitive behaviors, and heightened sensitivity to light, sound, or smell.

New York State Police note that persons with autism may face unique challenges during interactions with law enforcement due to communication differences, sensory sensitivities, and difficulties with social interaction.

Because of this, an interaction could lead to misunderstandings in instructions, providing information, and responding appropriately.

New York State patrol vehicles are being equipped with the Autism Awareness Visor Card to assist with communication and reduce confusion or fear during an interaction.

Each patrol vehicle will soon be equipped with a card for use as needed. The card is also available as a download for the public through the New York State Police public website.
