On June 22, 2022, three years after their lives were upended, 6,575 New Yorkers received word that they don’t have to worry about the money side of things because New York State Attorney General Letitia James went to bat for them and came out victorious.
Attorney General James joined forces with 45 fellow attorney generals to go after Carnival Cruise Line for compromising the personal information not only of its customers, but also of its employees all because the company did not follow proper internal security practices.
In May of 2019, Carnival Cruise Line employees and customers fell victim to a data breach which exposed personal information of 180,000 people. Carnival Cruise Line knew of the compromising situation its employees and customers were put in and yet, they did not report the breach until March of 2020, a full ten months after the breach happened.
Attorney James as well as the other involved attorney generals fought for their residents claiming that Carnival Cruise Line failed to safeguard the leaked personal information and a settlement was reached in the matter.
In a news release sent to Townsquare Media from the Office of Attorney General James, James is quoted as saying, ““In today’s digital age, companies must shore up their data privacy measures to protect consumers from fraud. New Yorkers on vacation should not have to worry about their personal information being exposed.”
Carnival Cruise Line is required to pay $1.25 million dollars to the victims of the date breach with each affected New Yorker receiving a payout of $44,000 from the company.
