Broome County security officers were investigating an incident at the downtown Binghamton public library during which a man was punched in the head.

A 50-year-old man said he was attacked by another man after a dispute that began inside a small room near the entrance of the library at 185 Court Street. The incident happened early Wednesday afternoon.

The man who was punched said he "got up and went outside" to get away from the other man. He said he reported what happened to a county security officer who was inside the library.

Although an ambulance was called, the man who was assaulted declined medical attention.

Broome County Public Library director Jacalyn Spoon and security division director James Dadamio did not return calls seeking information about the incident. It was not known whether any charges were to be filed.

Binghamton police were called to the scene to assist county security officers. The security officers declined to comment.
