People have moved into several dozen apartments following a multi-million dollar renovation project at the old Binghamton City Hall downtown.

The former Municipal Building was acquired by Dr. David Solarz of Westchester County in December 2019 for $1.8 million.

The structure between State and Collier streets was built in 1897 and 1898. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places 50 years ago.

Solarz said the 50-unit Park Place Plaza apartment complex opened in August. He said only one apartment is not rented at this time.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Solarz said the restoration of the building "is a real success story for Binghamton."

City code enforcement officials had posted condemnation notices at the site in July 2019 because of unsafe conditions.

Solarz said a lot of work had to be done to clean out the place. He said "bags of machetes and trash" were removed from the property, which most recently had been used as a hotel. He said "there were all kinds of surprises" discovered in the building.

While most of the renovation work has been finished, Solarz said a laundry room and a gym still must be completed.
