Apalachin Woman Charged with Vehicular Assault After Car Hits Man
Investigators now have filed a felony charge against a Tioga County woman who allegedly was driving a vehicle that struck and seriously injured a man.
According to New York State Police, 63-year-old Candy Barklow of Apalachin was arrested on Wednesday. She has been charged with aggravated vehicular assault.
Barklow already had been charged by Vestal police with felony driving while intoxicated after she was pulled over about 30 minutes after the man was hit in Apalachin.
Authorities say 40-year-old Brian Paolangeli was working on the front portion of his lawn on Rolling Terrace Drive when he was struck by a 2013 Honda Accord on June 6. State police were sent to the scene shortly before 10 p.m. but the vehicle had driven away.
Paolangeli had sustained head injuries and broken bones. He was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.
According to Vestal police, an officer spotted Barklow driving on Route 434 around 10:20 p.m. driving in a "manner that caused her to be pulled over."
Police say Barklow was "found to be intoxicated" after she drove the car on the shoulder of the highway. She was directed to appear in Vestal town court.
A state trooper inspected Barklow's vehicle outside the Vestal police station for possible damage.
After Barklow was arrested on the aggravated vehicular assault charge, she was taken to the Tioga County central arraignment facility for processing.
According to the Tioga County Sheriff's Officer, Barklow was not being held in the jail Thursday afternoon.
