Today In Classic Rock History

The Rolling Stones appeared on the TV show "Shindig!" (And it was Shindiginessly cool)

In 1968
Joe Cocker hit number one on the UK singles chart with his cover of the Beatles song "With A Little Help From My Friends." (And he still contorts like someone has shoved a lemon up his Kazoo!)

In 1972

In 2001
The Pink Floyd album "Echoes" was released.  The group teamed up with Future Forests, having the organization plant trees in an effort to offset the environmental impact of producing the CD and its packaging. (I'm surprised they didn't work with a group who planted weed?)

In 2006
Bon Jovi's Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora took part in the 40th annual Country Music Association Awards.  The group was also a nominee, with "Who Says You Can't Go Home," the duet with Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles a nominee for Musical Event of the Year, but the award went to Brad Paisley and Dolly Parton's collaboration, "When I Get Where I'm Going."

Guns N' Roses cancelled their concert in Portland, Maine.  City officials said the issue was band members' on-stage drinking, which was illegal because the show included pyrotechnics.  Band members claimed the fire marshals were imposing rules that weren't applied to previous concerts by other artists, and it kept them from putting on a quality show.

Alice Cooper, Queen, Iron Maiden, the New York Dolls, Ronnie James Dio, and the late Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynnott were among those recognized at the Classic Rock Roll of Honour ceremony, presented in London by the UK magazine "Classic Rock."

Marianne Faithfull announced that she was healthy and cancer free, two months after being diagnosed and starting treatments for breast cancer.  She credited early detection with her short and successful battle with the disease.

Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show bassist Jance Garfat was killed in a motorcycle accident.  He was 62.

In 2007
Meat Loaf officially called off the remainder of his European tour after several spot cancellations and an abbreviated performance nearly a week earlier.  The singer had been diagnosed with a vocal cord cyst, and was advised by doctors to take a break from performing.

Rod Stewart's impressive and elaborate model train set up in his Beverly Hills home was featured in the December 2007 issue of "Model Railroader" magazine.

New releases included the deluxe edition of The Beatles' DVD "Help!"

In 2009
Aerosmith's Joe Perry announced that frontman Steven Tyler was no longer in the group, telling "The Las Vegas Sun," quote, "Steven has quit as far as I can tell."  Tyler was thought to have left the band after a concert in Dubai five days earlier.  While talk of Aerosmith finding a new frontman followed, Tyler eventually returned to the fold. (So is Steven in the group, or outta the group? I Can't keep this stuff straight)

In 2011
Queen received the Global Icon Award at the MTV European Awards in Belfast, Northern Ireland.  Surviving Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor also performed with singer Adam Lambert at the event.
