We get a decent amount of snow here and this year is shaping up to be an above average snow season. Somehow, between the thaw and the first flake, we don't necessarily forget how to drive in the snow but we get lax.

Here is a refresher of some snow driving rules you need to know:

1. Have snow tires. If you don't, you want to get them.

2. Test yourself. Find a safe stretch of road or your driveway, drive slow and tap your brakes. If you slide reassess how much you need to be on the roads.

3. Keep your speeds down. You not only have to worry about your slipping and sliding, but others too. If you are going too fast and come upon a vehicle that doesn't have full control, you won't stop in time to avoid an accident. Hazards pop up quickly.

4. Keep a safe distance between you and others. Same deal as above. You need space to react. Try not to drive alongside others if possible for the same reason.

5. Clean your car off. If a pile of snow, that falls off your vehicle, creates a hazard for another driver, you are legally responsible. Scrape your windows for full visibility as well.

6. Do not slam on brakes. It's a quick way to go into a spin. Always lightly tap them.

7. If you skid, turn into it.

8. Assume the other drivers have no idea what they are doing. This keeps you extra aware of what is going on around you.

9. Turn on your headlights! Visibility is lower in snow. If you want to be seen, this is the way. Also remember, if you are using your wipers, you must, have your headlights on. it's the law in both PA and NY.

10. Be smart. If you don't have to go out, stay home and enjoy extra sleep!
