A car driver died after a tractor-trailer slammed into his vehicle on Interstate 81 in Kirkwood.

Authorities say 80-year-old David Sheeran of Yonkers was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

According to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, Sheeran's 2006 Cadillac was struck by the truck as both vehicles were northbound on the highway just before 4:30 a.m. Friday.

The tractor-trailer was driven by 54-year-old Brian Gerasimowicz of Lancaster.

Investigators say the car, which had been on the shoulder, suddenly pulled into the driving lane in front of the tractor-trailer.

The truck collided with the Cadillac, which became wedged under the tractor. Both vehicles traveled across the median, through a ditch and across both southbound lanes of I-81. They went up an embankment on the west side of the highway before coming to a rest.

Gerasimowicz was not injured. The truck he was driving was loaded with general freight.

All southbound lanes of the highway reopened shortly after noon. The crash investigation is continuing.
