The massive ad-filled newspaper has become a Thanksgiving Day tradition. But the overstuffed holiday publication is a relatively new concept in the Southern Tier.

The Binghamton Press was founded in 1904 and for decades chose not to publish a Thanksgiving edition. That changed in 1975 with the debut of The Holiday Press & Sun-Bulletin.

At the beginning, the Thanksgiving paper was a rather modest endeavor and cost 20 cents, the same price as a regular weekday edition.

For the next few decades, the cost of the Thanksgiving publication rose gradually as the price of the daily paper increased.

Beginning in 2006, executives at Gannett - which owns the Press & Sun-Bulletin - decided to charge a higher price for the the paper that ushers in the start of the holiday shopping season. The cover price that year jumped to $1.50.

In 2012, the Thanksgiving edition price rose to $3. The price went to $4 in 2016 and $5 in 2017 for what now is billed as a "premium" edition.

This year's Press & Sun-Bulletin Thanksgiving newspaper is the first not to be printed in Broome County. Gannett closed its Central New York Production Facility in June. The Binghamton paper now is printed in Rochester and trucked to Broome County.
