For a group that's had more than its share of outspoken frontmen over the years, Van Halen have managed to keep a pretty tight lid on its inner workings. That doesn't mean you can't turn up a few lesser-known details about the band with a little sleuthing, however -- and that's exactly what we've done with this edition of You Think You Know Classic Rock?

For starters, we've combed through the pages of the upcoming book 'Van Halen Rising: How a Southern California Backyard Party Band Saved Heavy Metal' to take a look back at the high school rivalry between singer David Lee Roth and the Van Halen brothers, Eddie and Alex -- as well as how a simple math equation trumped personal conflict to create one of the more dynamic creative combinations in rock throughout the late '70s and early '80s.

And that's not all. In Van Halen's later years, bassist Michael Anthony became known for his love of Jack Daniel's, but at his audition for the band, he and his future mates shared a case of a different kind of beverage. We'll fill you in on the details here, along with the name of the guy Anthony replaced -- allegedly because (if you can imagine such a thing) he partied too hard for Alex, Eddie and Diamond Dave.

It's all right here in this clip, so just turn up your volume and hit "play." You think you know Van Halen? Get ready to find out.
