It's a question reserved for only the most important events in history. Today is one of those days.

Where were you when John Lennon died?

I remember. I was working at a radio station in Elmira. The news came over the United Press International Teletype machine. Those noisy machines gave us state, national and world news, as well as sports and weather, 24 hours a day.

Whenever there was a major event happening, the story would be preceded by a series of bells going off inside the machine. That was the case 34 years ago on December 8th, 1980. I was on the air at the time, and broke in with the story, followed by the airing of some of John's songs. It was hard to express my sadness on that day. How can you sum up this person's life in the short time I had to talk on-air? Impossible.

Needless to say, it was a very sad day for the music world and beyond. John Lennon was an amazing songwriter, singer, guitarist, record producer and activist, who's life was cut far too short by a senseless act. I will always remember where I was they day he died, and will never forget the man, the legend.
