Did you know there is a contest between Upstate towns for an award for the most snowfall in a season?

I happened to trip over a website for the Golden Snowball Award today and it stopped me in my tracks.

It started as a friendly competition between National Weather Service offices in the 70's, but as those closed the contest died. It was revived in 2002 and has been going ever since. Buffalo, Albany, Rochester, and Syracuse compete with us for this prestigious award.

The town with the highest snowfall wins the award. We are currently in 3rd place. No!! We do not want this award! We have won it 3 times. The last was in the 85-86 season with a total of 81 inches.

You can keep tabs on the running totals and even donate to grow the prize too. There are several interesting facts floating around the site including our all time season snowfall record as 134 inches back in 1995-96.
