So, just where did these influences come from?

Well, they were considered just 'rockers' back in the day.
And by 'back in the day', I mean late 60s and early 70s.
Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Thin Lizzy, Jethro Tull, The Who and Led Zeppelin are some bands that come to mind.
