The leader of the United Way of Broome County says there is no plan to sell the agency's property in Vestal to clear the way for a major restaurant project.

United Way interim executive director LoriAnne Welch on Monday said there is "no intention" to put the site on the market "at this point in time."

Vestal town supervisor John Schaffer on Friday said a local developer was working to open Chick-Fil-A and LongHorn Steakhouse restaurants near the Vestal Parkway corridor.

On WNBF's Binghamton Now program, Schaffer said "right now we're anticipating it to be on the corner of Jensen Road and the Vestal Parkway," the site now occupied by the United Way headquarters.

Welch was not available Friday afternoon to discuss Schaffer's comments. But on Monday morning she said not only is the property not currently for sale, the United Way has not been approached to sell the site.

Schaffer had said if plans for the Chick-Fil-A restaurant were finalized, the restaurant could open late next year or early the following year. The town supervisor could not be reached Monday to respond to Welch's comments.

It could not be determined if the developer was consider other sites near the parkway intersection for the potential restaurant project.
