About the same time the Chenango Ambulance Service informed Broome County it ceased operations due to financial problems, another ambulance squad has begun asking residents in its coverage area for help.

The Union Volunteer Emergency Squad has sent out a fund-raising appeal asking for donations to help defray costs.

The squad says purchases, including two replacement ambulances are expected to cost $492,000 while just the cost of maintaining the fleet is put at $227,000.

Donations are tax deductible and can be sent to the Union Volunteer Emergency Squad, Incorporated at 8 South Avenue B, Endwell, New York 13760 or online at www.unionems.com.  Donors can also pay by credit card over the phone by calling (607) 754-3414, extension 221.
