Motorists are encountering an early sign of spring: construction work on Riverside Drive in Binghamton.

Those trying to travel through the West Side of Binghamton April 12 reported single lane traffic and back-ups on  Riverside Drive, just inside the City line between Margaret Street and West End Avenue.

Also, clusters of pipe structures are sticking up above the pavement a few inches for a couple blocks from the Johnson City line, eastward, causing motorists to swerve to avoid hitting them.

Drivers should be aware of unannounced lane and road closures popping up as preparations begin for the full construction season.

The first part of the second phase of the rehabilitation of riverside Drive, roughly from Beethoven Street, west to the Johnson City line, was completed last fall.  The top-coat paving and other finishing work is being done this year.

Alternate routes include the Vestal Parkway, Leroy Street, Main Street and even Clinton Street to the north.
