A spectacular fire damaged a section of Binghamton's East Middle School.

The two-alarm blaze at the school at 167 East Frederick Street was reported around 2:45 p.m. July 23.

Initial reports indicated about 10 workers who were involved in a roofing project may have been trapped on top of the three-story building.

They were assisted to the ground by firefighters.

City fire trucks surrounded the building, pouring water onto the roof. The blaze was knocked down after about 20 minutes.

Binghamton Mayor Richard David told WNBF News at the scene there were no reported injuries.

City school superintendent Marion Martinez expressed relief that the fire damage appeared to be confined to a relatively small area of the roof on the south side of the building.

Martinez indicated there may have been minor smoke and water damage on the upper floor of the building.
