Two Alarm Fire at Jimay’s Flea Market in Conklin
A weight restriction on the bridge over Snake Creek on Conklin Road is not only posing a problem for heavy commercial traffic but also for emergency vehicles.
Several fire companies had to deal with the restriction when they were called to a two-alarm blaze at a house on the Jimay’s Flea Market property at around 10 p.m. August 16.
Broome County Emergency Services officials say Conklin firefighters were joined by about a half dozen surrounding departments, including crews from Pennsylvania to battle the flames at the popular flea market, which was already wrecked by flood waters August 14.
Firefighters were on the scene for about four hours.
No one was in the house at the time and there were no injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
It’s not known when the flea market will be able to reopen. There had been indications that cleaning up from the flood alone could take the better part of a month as vendors sort through what is left of their wares and prepare to finish out the season.
