More than 40 percent of a city-owned parking garage in downtown Binghamton will be out of service until further notice.

Mayor Richard David announced 220 of the 535 parking spaces in the Collier Street garage will be unavailable.

The top two levels of the crumbling parking structure have been closed indefinitely because of "growing repair needs."

Repair work on the garage ground to a halt this week after it became clear the garage was in much worse shape than initially believed.

City officials now plan to keep the top floors closed while trying to keep the lower levels in use until 2018.

Engineering consultants have determined by that time, the entire garage will need to be shut down and the structure will have to be demolished.

City-owned and parking management vehicles have been moved to nearby garages on State Street and Water Street.

Space at the Collier Street garage now is extremely limited. City officials are advising vehicle owners to use the other downtown garages.
