The Firefighters’ Association of the State of New York says everyone should leave themselves reminders before the weekend to replace the batteries in their smoke detectors when they turn their clocks ahead overnight March 11-12.

Alarms equipped with sealed-in batteries should be tested to make sure they are in good working condition.

FASNY says units should also have dust vacuumed or blown out and should be tested at least once a month by pressing the test button.

You should never paint a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm and smoke alarms should be installed on every floor of the home, including in the basement.

The American Red Cross has a program that installs free smoke alarms in homes and offers fire safety instruction.  Contact the Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross to schedule an installation at (607) 785-7207.
