This was an all-time favorite toy for boys growing up in the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s. I remember having a couple of guns, holsters, and of course those red rolls of caps. Yep, I can still smell the powder after the flash and bang!

I also remember that we didn’t always use the guns. Sometimes we would just roll out the caps on a flat surface, like the sidewalk and hit the little bumps on the caps with a rock to ignite each one.

I think parents today would have a huge meltdown if they saw their children playing the way we use to play with this type of toy.

They still make these guns, but today it’s a lot different. First all, cap guns must have a bright red, yellow or orange cap over the muzzle so to identify this as a toy, and to be honest I don’t even know if you can get the old style rolls of caps in stores anymore. However, you can find them on eBay! With lawsuits and today’s parents being a lot more conservative in regards to child safety, I can understand and respect the reasons behind pulling these out of stores. It’s simply a different world today.

I don’t think the vintage cap guns will ever return they way they were before, but it’s fun to reminisce!

Check out a few videos of the different types of toy guns we had! You’ll never see today's kids doing this anymore.
