Long before the new school year demanded back packs, book bags, and the other techno gadgets of today, life was much simpler.

I remember my mom getting us some new clothes, a pack of pens, some paper along with that big binder to put in the loose leaf paper, complete with pre-punched holes, and one of the coolest items for the new school year, a lunch box.

Lunch boxes in the 60’s & 70’s were metal with a lid that had a buckle latch, most also came with a small thermos bottle that fit inside for bringing milk, juice or whatever mom packed into it.

Most of the lunch boxes had a popular theme such as your favorite Saturday morning cartoon, or prime time television show, I had a “Lost in Space” lunch box and another one I recall, was from an old TV show called “The Guns of Will Sonnet

Many schools around that time had not yet implemented the school lunch program, so if you didn’t live close enough to go home for lunch you brought your lunch with you.

That’s my Throwback Thursday memory; did you have a lunch box as a kid? Which theme was yours? Bounce me an e-mail and let me know. doug@991thewhale.com
