An Apalachin man and his three young children were unhurt after the sport utility vehicle they were in became engulfed in flames in Binghamton just off Interstate 81.

Firefighters and police were called to Bigelow Street near the city border with the town of Dickinson around 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The father who had been driving the 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe said he encountered a tire problem on the vehicle while traveling on Interstate 81.

The man said he exited the highway and continued toward a relative's residence when the tire caught on fire.

The driver and the three children who were in the SUV got out safely as the flames spread.

Thick black smoke from the burning vehicle was visible for miles. Firefighters from Five Mile Point and Port Dickinson responded to the scene.
