I was unemployed for about 2 years before landing on 99.1 The Whale. I know how tough it is get back to work, but through my time in the line, I figured a few things out. With these tricks, you can get back to work! There's a lot to the process, so it will be a three part blog.

First off, you will be angry, bitter or maybe depressed at first. Shake it off! Use that energy to build a better life. There are millions of people out of a job just like you. You aren't alone. Whatever you do, do not look at the classifieds just yet. You aren't ready.

The next thing you need to do is figure out what type of job you want. Make a list. Whether it's realistic or not, put it on there. There are things you need to ask yourself while doing this "homework". What do I want to do? What do I enjoy (hobby or otherwise)? What am I good at? And the big question: what is my dream job? You should have several items on your list in the end. This may sound tedious, but trust me, you will be get a job.

Look at all the job possibilities on your list, then write down what you need to get that job. More schooling, more experience, etc. You probably have some talents that work with most of your list, so write that down under each job too.

Next, write the word confidence. You probably lack it at this point, but it's the key ingredient to career happiness. For me, remembering I could do what I put my mind to; having confidence, helped me get to the Whale.

Now, here's the realistic part. The most you can bring home on unemployment in New York is $354 a week (after taxes). So, how long can you look for work before the finances suffer?  If you don't have much time, don't freak out. We'll get you situated. You may have to get a temporary part time job to get through. I did and it worked out.

There's one more list to write and you will need help for this. Answer this question: What are your best qualities when dealing with people? Do friends say you are easy to talk to? Outgoing? Funny? These qualities will help you get that job. Plus being told will build your all important confidence! That's enough for today.

Tomorrow: Part 2: Standing Out by Thinking Outside of the Box.
