How did Halloween costumes come to be? That's the question rattling in my head this morning!

Apparently, we can thank the Celtic people and then the development of Christianity into wider regions. Costumes or disguises were originally worn during the period of time when spirits, fairies and the souls of the dead were believed to be able to visit our world. All this stuff happened in the 15th century, by the way.

So, fast forward to the U.S. of A.  In the early 1900's, the costumes were creative, yet simple because few people had money and they used what they had available. It stayed that way for decades.

Somehow, in the 1970's, kids like me were cheaped out! We had vinyl costumes with a simple mask. They were hot and not creative at all. Luckily, my Mom occasionally made us costumes. I got to be a bride one year. That was popular back then. They also only cost about $1.99 to $2.99. that may explain the popularity.

I remember our costumes being handed down to each other. At least I got to wear my brother's Casper costume once! Now, the costumes are as ornate as you can make them and can be mixed and matched. I don't think they are reused these days.
