This summer the surviving members of The Grateful Dead will perform on stage for the last time, as they celebrate the band's 50th anniversary!

I want to make this perfectly clear, I am not a “Dead Head”, but I do enjoy their songs.

I’ve always considered The Grateful Dead as the ultimate people’s jam band. Many fans have followed these guys from city to city for months at a time.

What makes this group so special? Ask any "D.H.' and watch their face light up, as they talk about seeing them in concert.

I’ve known people that have had their walls filled with racks of cassette tapes from various concerts, another unique quality of this band is they let fans tape their shows.

I often wished I would have attended a Grateful Dead concert, according to huge fans, it was quite an experience. You never knew what you would hear and how you would hear it, as the band rarely played anything the same way twice.

The group was put together in 1965 with founding members Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Ron McKernam, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann.

When Jerry Garcia died in August of 1995, The Grateful Dead decided to disband, during the past 20 years some of the members have reunited for special shows and this year they’ll perform their final three shows, July 3rd through the 5th at Chicago’s Soldier field.

I was standing in a line somewhere in 1995 when the news came out that Jerry Garcia died. One of the two people in front of me were talking about it, one guy said "who is he?" While the other said, "if you don’t know I’ll never be able to explain him to you."

To all The Grateful Dead fans reading this blog, there will never be another group like this one, savor the moments.

I have posted a complete G.D. concert on video from 1977, along with Jerry Garcia’s last interview below.
